Leaves in water

Damjan and I were walking home after dinner on Monday. It was 10pm and still hot from a 40°C day. At City Square, we found a small knot of children in front of the fountain. They were pushing leaves through the water to make shapes — words, a love heart.

Damjan wanted to do his name so I collected up some leaves for him. Then it was my turn.

Walking home from work the next day, there were still people at the fountain, making shapes with leaves. There are now more shapes and names. I think we got in early on this Melbourne meme. I wonder how long it will last?

What I saw at Costco

Carlo took us to Costco. We wanted to buy tennis balls.

We came by public transport, carrying our biggest backpacks. We left with lots of stuff (including 30 packs of chewing gum). We didn’t get tennis balls, though, because they came only in packs of 48.

Here are some things I saw.

Not landfill

I was walking to the Monash University engineering department when this shocking sight confronted me.

Rubbish in front of the engineering library

Oh no! Someone spilled a rubbish bin and it’s going everywhere! …Hey, wait a second… The bin is half buried in the ground.

Yep, it’s an art installation.

Dead bat

I found a bat dead on the nature strip when walking home one night. It was as big as a good sized melon.

Fine print

The convenience store 7-Eleven has a series of posters featuring a range of Slurpee flavours.

The fine print says: ‘Fruit image shown is illustrative of flavour only and not an ingredient of the product.’

I wonder if the lawyers told them to do that.

Parking the cherry picker

Someone parked their cherry picker in the Monash University carpark. Monash Uni is full of vigilant park inspectors. I wonder if this picker would ever get a ticket?

Change and advice

I was second in the queue to pick up my photos from the Kmart photo lab.

A young man was making pleasant conversation as he packaged up the lady’s wedding photos.

‘There you go,’ he said and handed over the photos and the receipt.

‘Great, thanks, bye,’ said the lady. I stepped forward as she turned away. She had gotten five metres away when the young Kmart employee called her back.

‘Excuse me! I forgot to give you change.’

He took the a five cent coin out of the cash register and pushed it across the counter to her.

‘Don’t spend it all at once,’ he advised her gravely.

Heartburn

A pair of teenagers were loitering on the ground floor balcony of a Council estate. As I walked past, I heard, ‘WHOOOA! HEARTBURN!’

His friend said, ‘What do heartburn feels like?’

‘Feels like my heart is on FIRE!’
